Looks like Lowepro had been listening to a lot of feedback and questions from action/outdoor photographers when they made this little number. Built from lightweight Ripstop nylon, the pack is about keeping the mass down whilst providing all the requirements for the active photographer 'on the hill'. (Hate that phrase really, but can't think of a better one right now). For people like me, who want to pare down the camera kit to the bare essentials while still being able to transport clothes, water, food and any other items, it is nigh on perfect. Climbers, hikers, hill runners too , I should imagine will benefit from the features the PS 200AW has to offer. The pack is narrow to fit snugly to the body which, coupled with the sternum strap, waist belt and shoulder stablisers, prevents rotation around the torso. The waits straps are high which allows rotation of the torso - necessary for active sports. The shoulder straps are thin to reduce weight but without any noticeable loss in comfort. They have plenty of loops to thread a hydration bladder hose, or hang other accoutrements (nice word that). I said hydration bladder because the pack has a pocket devoted to just that and although I crammed a three litre version in there, I don't think it is designed for all that water. Two litres will suffice then.

Gwp-120416-houffalize_1594

Entry to the camera compart is via a side pocket placed where it is located so the pack can be swung off the shoulder and opened with minimum faff. A drawstring inside the cover is pulled tight to cinch everything down and stop it rattling around when the wearer is on the move. Large loops on each zip are brilliant for sticking a fat index finger in. Or a thinner index finger with a glove over it. Nice touch. On a day when I decided to run light, I put a 17-55mm, a 10.5mm fisheye and a speedlight into the camera section. Two Pocket Wizards went into the main storage compartment along with a waterproof, memory cards and two very tasty 'doorstop' sandwiches courtesy of the Press facilities at the event I was working. I know, spoilt aren't we? As you see in the pic I also stashed the 70-200 in the main pocket. This was because I was walking - I would carry a lighter load if biking.

20120415_0223_crobertson
On the other side of the pack to the 'door' is a pocket for other bits you need to grab quickly. On this particular shoot I eschewed the water bIadder, put a water bottle in and this little piece of magic from Lastolite! See how versatile it is? Straps at the base of pack allow for a short tripod or rolled up jacket etc. I can't rave enough about this pack. It's a beauty born of sound design and common sense and working with the end user. The Photo Sport 200AW comes in black and Lowepro orange which will please those that live up in high places where they are hard to spot. If black is your new black then there is a loop in the pack to attach an LED which can be flashed at mountain rescue helicopters. Kidding - give it a look. And many thanks to Charles Robertson for shooting the images of me in the field.

UCI World Cup XCO. Round two in Houffalize, Belgium. First lap. As the main players dive into the steep and technical new section called 'La Descente du Moulin Bock' Scott SwissPower rider Nino Schurter 'discovers' a  new line that takes him between the photographer and his remote flash on a tripod cutting the hairpin and adding a nice lead over the chasers. Look at frames eight and nine as current World Champ' Jaroslav Kulhavy does a 'WTF' double take. Priceless. They should rename this section the 'Schurter" and be done with it.

I'm laid up at the moment, which seems the best time to get non-strenuous chores done such as keywording and databasing. I was trawling through my bike images when I came across some pix I shot of the Pegoretti brothers for Pro Cycling, when me and Robert Millar travelled to Italy to sample the famous brand of racing cycle. This was over ten years ago and I couldn't for the life of me remember Diario's brother's name (Gianni as it happens), so I did a web search and knock me down with a piece of carbon lighter than a feather, there was Millar's original copy from the magazine for all to see! I do remember it was a great couple of days in Italy and we were looked after like kings in the Pegoretti house. We missed our flight by a gnat's chuff after the long and drawn out dinner in true Ialian style. So, reel back the years and read Robert's opinion of these craftsmen's machines. And click right here to see a few more images.

Well, smoke at least. Really wanted to put this image of a rider in a wind tunnel because I think it came out really well and because I'd seen lots of those smoke trail images but never had one of my own! I shot a few frames off ,experimenting with the shutter drag to achieve the right effect with the smoke stream. The image was processed out in Lightroom and I kept the balance on the blue side to keep it all cool and sci-fi-ish.

Gwp-dan-jarvis-040-1
To those that know him - and that is many- Dan Jarvis is the voice of mountain biking in the UK and World Cup races abroad, and is bringing his dulcet Essex tones to the road disciplines as well. Shred magazine have an interview with Dan right here and bless 'em, they asked me to go out to the Thames Estuary to shoot the images. The most obvious place was at Hadleigh Castle which commands a high point overlooking the venue for the Olympic MTB race and Canvey Island (one time home of rythmn and blues stompers Doctor Feelgood and the famous Goldmine soul club) beyond. I wanted to photograph Dan in 'Motty' attire i.e sheepskin coat and a lip mic but it appears no one offloads sheepskins into charity shops any longer. And have you seen the price of a lip mic?!  So I pulled my mac out of the wardrobe, grabbed a tie and headphones as props. I had a mic and made the flag which I later Photoshopped with 'Dan TV'. No time to get one made. I used my Q-Flash with classic cross lighting set up and no mods other than the diffusers. The sky was under exposed and burned down in post. Job done. NEXT!

Screen_shot_2012-02-24_at_12
After the Steve Peat shoot in Sheffield, part deux of the Heroes for Heroes feature series took me to over the Snake Pass to photograph UK off road racing stalwart Nick Craig. Unlike Steve's session which was inside, Nick and I opted to shoot in a local park. Still, the lighting set up remained very similar. I used Q-Flash T2 heads and Pocket Wizard Multimax transceivers. As you can see I began with Nick on the bench clasping the legendary 'Guilt Frame For Heroes'. (Pound Shop). These were passable but not really as punchy as I like, and not really an 'heroic' pose. Lucky for me the sky was as moody as, so I shot from a low angle straight into the dark clouds. The main light camera right and high, fill light was camera left and if you look carefully at the bottom left of the frame you can see that is was blue gelled. Nick's hero is GB Olympian Daley Thompson and an image was found, Rights passed, and photoshopped into the awaiting frame. Job Done.

I know, I know the headline is well overdone so let's move on! This was from a trip to the last Six Day of the 2011/2012 calender, in the Ballerup Arena outside Copenhagen, Denmark. The temperatures may have been -10 outside but inside the action was white hot and the crowds as vocal as ever.

Gwp-copenhagen6-003
And although I was on a different agenda, I managed to come away with a few nice action images for the files, I hope you'll agree. Mostly shot on 70-200 2.8 lens under the ambient lighting in the arena. I did shoot some wide angle and flash images from trackside, but to be honest they will never have as much form as these. High ISO rules again!

Shot as the snow was thawing, this was an image for a bike test feature and framed to be a potential opener. As you can see, I added some sky to what was a grey day! The fill was from an SB-800 with a Rogue Flashbender attached, placed to the rider's left. The stretch of road was just 'unbusy' enough for us to nail a few frames with the lines converging nicely into the distance, before any vehicle encroached. Like it?

Albert

Ten images of Neils Albert winning the 2012 cross Worlds in style, taking off from the first lap and leading all the way to the chequered flag. Albert's dominance was a repeat of the women's race in the morning when Marianne Vos of Holland rode away from the pack. In fact the real action was the battles for the other steps on the podium. The famous Koksijde sand dune course had been altered for the Worlds with more sand than ever - so a rider that didn't feel confident getting loose was always going to suffer! First gallery from last weekend's World Cyclocross Championships in Koksijde, Belgium. If you've never experienced a Belgian cross crowd in full flow it's well worth the effort of trying to get to a race - any race; the public turn out to drink and be merry whether it's a World Cup, GVA, Super Prestige or a local fish and chipper. Or should that be frites and mayo-er....

Gwp-120129_1098
It's disc brakes being raced at the highest level of cyclocross-the World 'Cross champs in Koksijde, Belgium 2012.  USA team member Tim Johnson of the Cannondale outfit obviously isn't too bothered with yes/no debate as he ploughs through the deep sand at this testing venue.  The 'Dale bikes were equipped with Avid mechanical discs rather than an hydraulic system. Whether more powerful brakes are needed at such a course is questionable - and this may have been Johnson's second bike - but the fact remains; discs are being raced at top level. Watch for massive galleries from the weekend's action.

When you get offered a ride in a 'copter you never say no. Opportunities like that don't come up very often. This is an aerial view of the 4X track at the World Mountain Bike Champs in Les Gets in France in '04. Quite nice for a rider to have seen it this way perhaps? And below is Monsieur Arc En Ciel himself hanging out and snapping. Being a native he had a better viewpoint than mine, the ear of the pilot and certainly a better fastening holding him in. I daren't have leant too far out or I would done the world's best ever invisible bungee jump!
